Appendix: Overloaded / Demorama 2006
Appendix, a band from Bratislava, Slovakia, certainly has taken the traditional rhythmical nature of the music of their homeland and made it into some powerful rock. When I first listened to their album “Overloaded,” I immediately thought they had lot in common with the band Mr. Bungle, which is known for using strange time signatures and surprising musical hooks. Lead singer Jural Benetin’s deep voice is also akin to Mike Patton’s. The lyrics are a bit nonsensical at times, but if you listen to a lot of “English as a Second Language” bands, you learn to cut the guys a little slack. Besides, I think Appendix has a sense of humor. Their influences run the gamut from jazz to metal, always with schizophrenic drumming by Henrich Offerman and the insistent bass of Lukas Fila (who also writes the lyrics). If you are looking for a new band to challenge your ears and toe tapping abilities, I’d check them out. [Vanessa Moore Ardolino]
